I was recently wrestling to explain to a relatively new Christian how God works in us as his people.
I found myself using the phrase ‘Christ in us’ a lot, because that is how the Bible describes it. In fact biblically speaking we are ‘in Christ’ and he is ‘in us’. However, Christ is in Heaven, seated at the right hand of the Father (Ephesians 1:20), so how can he be in us? That inevitably lead on to me explaining the Trinity; that God is three persons yet one God. And that he exists in his fulness in each of those three persons.
Once I’d started explaining how God the Holy Spirit works in us, things clarified for my friend. I took him to John chapters 14-16 where Jesus explained the same thing to his disciples. Then we looked at Acts, where we read of people being ‘filled with the Holy Spirit’ and ‘led by the Spirit’. By the time I’d tried to explain how God speaks to me, leads me and empowers me by his Holy Spirit within me, he was grasping it … to a point.
I pondered on our conversation over the following days, still trying to find a simple analogy to help my friend grasp this mind-blowing truth. And a few days later, while walking my dog and praying, it came to me and this message was born: We are a Divine Infusion.
I pray that this practical teaching about the Holy Spirit will equip you to live an empowered life and deepen your understanding of the amazing internal resource you have as a Christian. Be sure to listen to the end for the full picture.
