The New Bag

… hold on to what is good

1 Thess 5:21

Getting a new bag for everyday use is a big deal, especially if you’ve had your old one for years.

Some things have been in there for longer than you can remember … just in case you need them of course! So, when it comes to deciding what to move from your old bag to the new one, there’s some serious de-cluttering to do. Does it stay or does it go, becomes the question?

Life’s like that too, especially at the turn of the year. Do you take all the clutter of this year into the next, just in case you need it?

God’s advice is, ‘Hold onto what is good’ (1 Thess 5:21).

As the year turns, prayerfully take stock of things. Keep what is good, purposeful and life-enriching. Hold onto your good friendships, positive habits, spiritual disciplines and life-giving routines, and consciously put them into your ‘new bag’ of next year.

Then, put the rest in the bin, without sentimentality or regret. God needs you to ‘hold onto what is good’ so you’re only carrying the things that will help you serve His purpose for your life in this next season.
