The Pause Button

The Pause Button

Come with me to a quiet place and get some rest.

Mark 6:31

‘Dinner’s ready! Come to the table quickly, before it goes cold …’ Even so, it often resulted in cries of ‘hang on, the programme will be finished in a few minutes’ from our children. But those days are gone because we can now pause live TV. What a great invention!

In fact, these days it seems like everything can be paused and returned to after things that are best not paused take priority – like dinner! We just have to be willing to press the pause button.

Life is like that. At times, we must be willing to press the ‘pause button’ and let more important things take priority. Things like rest, reflection, time for refreshing solitude, recuperation, and refocussing.

Throughout the Bible there is a theme of REST that’s ultimately fulfilled by us being willing to rest in Christ’s finished work. We have a perpetual spiritual rest in Him (Hebrews 4:3) but also need rest for our bodies and souls, which Jesus also gives if we will ‘press pause’ and take time aside with him (Matthew 11:28-30).

The SABBATH principle also ensures we ‘press pause’ regularly and enjoy a healthy pattern of rest from the busyness of life.

So too, the SELAH principle found in the Psalms, exists to help us stop and think about what we are reading and doing.

I wonder, is it time to ‘press pause’?

Talk to Jesus about it, because he promises you rest for you soul when you do.
